Contrail
Privacy Policy
How Perret Labs handles your information in the Contrail iPhone app and on perretlabs.com: what we collect, why, where it is stored, and the controls you have.
Effective date: October 10, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how Perret Labs LLC (“Perret Labs”, “we”, “us”) handles information when you use Contrail, our iPhone golf app (to be listed on the App Store as “Contrail Golf”), and when you visit our website, perretlabs.com.
The short version
- Contrail uses your location to measure your golf shots. It asks for “While Using” access only, never “Always”, and it keeps using location in the background only while a round is in progress.
- Every shot is saved on your iPhone first. If you have an account, your shots, rounds and profile are also stored on our servers at Amazon Web Services (AWS) in the United States. That includes the precise GPS coordinates of where each shot started and landed.
- You decide who sees each round you share: Everyone, Followers (the default) or only you.
- We don’t run ads, we don’t track you across apps or websites, we don’t use analytics or crash-reporting tools, and we don’t sell or share your personal data.
- You can export your shots (CSV, GeoJSON or GPX) and delete your account in the app at any time.
- Our website sets no cookies and has no analytics or trackers.
Who we are
Perret Labs LLC is a Virginia limited liability company in the United States. We are responsible for (the “controller” of) the personal information described in this policy.
If you have a question about this policy or your information, email support@perretlabs.com.
The Contrail app
Permissions Contrail asks for, and why
Contrail asks for each permission only for the reason given below. You can change any of them later in your iPhone’s Settings app.
Location (“While Using” only)
Contrail uses your location during a round to measure your shots: where you hit from and where your ball stopped.
- Contrail asks for “While Using” access. It never asks for “Always” access.
- Location continues while your phone is locked only while a round is in progress, and it stops when the round ends.
- Contrail may ask for temporary Precise Location to measure where your ball stopped.
- In rounds where you use a launch monitor, location is used only while a shot you are marking by GPS is open.
Motion & Fitness
Contrail uses motion data to tell whether you are walking, riding or standing still. This helps save battery and notice when you have reached your ball. Motion data stays on your iPhone and is never uploaded.
Bluetooth
Contrail uses Bluetooth to connect to your launch monitor and receive your shots.
Photos (add only)
Contrail asks for permission to add photos only, and only to save a shot image when you tap Save Image. It cannot read your photo library. If you choose a profile photo, you pick it with the iPhone’s own photo picker, which needs no permission.
Notifications
Contrail uses local notifications only, which are created on your iPhone. It does not use push notifications.
Information stored on your iPhone
Contrail keeps an on-device database of your shots, rounds, practice sessions, course and range library, preferences, profile and privacy settings. Every shot is saved on your iPhone first.
Information we store on our servers
When you have an account and are online, Contrail sends the following to our servers:
- Shots, including the precise GPS coordinates of where each shot started and where it landed.
- Rounds, your profile and your privacy settings, and the rounds you choose to share.
- Account information: your email address, display name and avatar (a color or an optional photo), and, if you choose to add them, a bio, handicap and home course.
- Social information: follows and follow requests, blocks, reports, comments and reactions, in-app notifications (for example, that someone followed you), and invite codes.
We use this information to run Contrail: to keep your shots and rounds in your account, to show your stats and history, to power the Clubhouse (feed, profiles, follows, comments, reactions and leaderboards), to keep the community safe (for example, acting on reports and honoring blocks), and to reply when you contact us.
Who can see what
Each round you share is visible to Everyone, Followers (the default) or only you, and you can change this for each round. You can also choose to hide courses.
Please keep in mind:
- Rounds you share, and the shots in them, may appear in the Clubhouse feed and on “Beat my drive” hole leaderboards, according to your visibility settings. A shared round shows where you played.
- Comments and reactions you leave on someone else’s round can be seen by the people who can see that round.
- Other Contrail users can see your profile in the Clubhouse so they can find and follow you.
Where your information is stored
Our servers are run by Amazon Web Services (AWS) in the United States. Sign-in is handled by Amazon Cognito, and your data is stored in Amazon DynamoDB. AWS processes this information on our behalf to provide the service.
Third-party services and data
- Maps: Contrail shows maps using Apple MapKit. Apple handles map requests under its own privacy policy.
- Course imagery: course imagery may be fetched from the US Geological Survey (USGS) National Map public imagery service. Like any internet request, this tells the service your device’s IP address and the area being requested. We don’t send it your account information.
- Course data: Contrail’s course data includes data from OpenStreetMap, © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database License (ODbL).
No other third-party software in Contrail receives your personal information. Apart from Apple’s own frameworks, the app includes just two outside software libraries: one for its on-device database and a standard sign-in library (OpenID/OAuth).
What we don’t do
- We don’t show ads.
- We don’t track you across other companies’ apps or websites. (That’s why Contrail never asks for permission to track you.)
- We don’t use analytics or crash-reporting tools in the app.
- We don’t sell your personal data, and we don’t share it with anyone for advertising.
We disclose your information only to AWS, which hosts it for us; to other Contrail users, as described in “Who can see what”; or if the law requires it.
Your choices and controls
- Export your shots from the app at any time as CSV, GeoJSON or GPX files.
- Change who sees each round (Everyone, Followers or only you).
- Change permissions (location, motion, Bluetooth, photos and notifications) at any time in your iPhone’s Settings app.
- Block and report other users in the Clubhouse.
- Delete your account in the app: Settings → Account → Delete account. If you can’t use the app, email support@perretlabs.com from the address on your account. See Delete your Contrail account for the steps.
- Ask us to access, correct or delete your information, or ask any privacy question, at support@perretlabs.com. We may need to confirm that the account is yours before acting on a request.
What happens when you delete your account
When you delete your account, we delete your account and profile, and your shots and rounds. We are still completing automatic deletion of some related items, such as comments (including comments you left on other golfers’ rounds), reactions and follow requests. Until that’s finished, email support@perretlabs.com and we will remove any that remain.
Our website (perretlabs.com)
Our website is designed to collect as little as possible.
- No cookies, analytics or trackers. The site doesn’t set cookies, and it doesn’t use analytics, advertising or tracking tools.
- What you choose to send us. We only receive personal information on the website when you choose to send it, for example:
- Emailing us. If you email hello@perretlabs.com or support@perretlabs.com, we receive your email address and whatever you write, and we use it to reply to you.
- Launch news. The launch-news sign-up currently works by email: it opens a message to hello@perretlabs.com. We use your email address only to tell you about Contrail’s launch, and you can ask us to remove it at any time.
- Technical information. Like any website, the servers that deliver our pages receive standard technical information, such as your IP address and browser type, in order to send you the page. We don’t use it for analytics or advertising.
How long we keep information
We keep information only as long as we need it:
- Account, shot and round data. Kept while your account is active. When you delete your account, we delete it from our live systems within 30 days. Copies in our backups expire within a further 35 days.
- Comments, reactions and follows. Deleted along with your account (see “What happens when you delete your account” above).
- Reports and blocks. Kept for up to 12 months, so we can deal with abuse.
- Support emails. Kept for up to 2 years after your last message to us.
- Launch-news email addresses. Kept until 12 months after Contrail launches, or until you ask us to remove yours, whichever comes first.
- Website server logs. We don’t keep them.
Children
Contrail is not directed to children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has given us personal information, email support@perretlabs.com and we will delete it.
Security
We take reasonable steps to protect your information, and we rely on AWS, including Amazon Cognito for sign-in, to store it. No app, website or online service can be perfectly secure, so we can’t promise that your information will never be accessed without permission. If you think your account has been compromised, please email support@perretlabs.com.
If you live outside the United States
Perret Labs is based in the United States, and your information is stored and processed in the United States. If you use Contrail or our website from elsewhere, your information will be transferred to and processed in the United States, where data protection laws may differ from those where you live.
Your privacy rights
Depending on where you live, you may have legal rights over your personal information, such as the right to access it, correct it, delete it or get a copy of it. To use any of these rights, email support@perretlabs.com. We won’t treat you differently for using your rights.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as Contrail and our website change. When we do, we will change the date at the top of this page. If a change significantly affects how we handle your information, we will take reasonable steps to tell you, for example in the app or by email.
